Tourist Tax (City Tax)
A small per-night fee charged by some cities on top of your hotel rate — usually collected at check-in, not bundled into the booking.
A tourist tax is a per-night fee charged by city or national governments on top of your hotel booking. It's not listed on Booking.com or Agoda — you pay it in cash at hotel check-in, usually €1–€5/night.
Cities that charge tourist tax (2026):
- **Bali, Indonesia** — IDR 150,000 (~₹800) one-time fee on arrival (not per night; pay online via lovebali.baliprov.go.id before arrival).
- **Venice, Italy** — €5/day; €10/day on peak weekends; check venezianizziamo.it.
- **Rome, Italy** — €4–7/night depending on hotel star rating.
- **Paris, France** — €1–8/night by hotel category.
- **Amsterdam, Netherlands** — 7% of room rate + €3/night flat fee.
- **Barcelona, Spain** — €1.75–5.50/night.
- **Lisbon, Portugal** — €2/night.
- **Vienna, Austria** — €0.65–4.20/night.
- **Dubai, UAE** — AED 7–20/night ("tourism dirham fee") — automatically added to hotel bill.
- **Bhutan** — SDF (Sustainable Development Fee) of ₹1,200/night per Indian visitor.
- **Maldives** — Green Tax USD 6/night per traveler (resorts collect at checkout).
- All of Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines
- All of UK (London hotels include any city tax in the rate)
- Most of Eastern Europe
- All of US (replaced by "resort fees" — a different rip-off entirely)
Indian-specific tip: Always have €30–€50 in cash for the European cities listed above. Hotels in Venice especially have rejected card payment for tourist tax in 2025–26.
