Top 10 visa-free / low-friction countries for Indian passport in May 2026

Thailand's 60-day visa-exemption was reverted to 30 days on 21 May 2026 (Cabinet decision dated 19 May). Same FREE stamp, shorter duration. Here's the updated top 10 list of low-friction destinations for Indian passports.

On 19 May 2026 the Thai Cabinet decided to revert the 60-day visa-exemption that Indian passport holders had enjoyed since July 2024 back to 30 days, effective 21 May 2026. Same FREE entry — just shorter. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is now mandatory online (free) within 72h of arrival. Here's the updated top 10 low-friction destinations Indians can still enter without going through an embassy in May 2026.

1. Thailand — 30 days visa-free. Was 60 (Jul 2024–May 2026), reverted on 21 May 2026. Same FREE stamp on arrival. TDAC must be submitted online within 72h of arrival (free). For 31+ day stays, paid e-Visa (~INR 3,000 single-entry) or the DTV digital-nomad visa (180 days per entry, multi-entry). Read: Thailand reversion post.

2. Sri Lanka — free ETA confirmed through 2026. The ETA fee was waived in 2024 and the Cabinet ratified another extension through 2026 in April 2026 (further extension expected). 30-day stay, double-entry. Fill the ETA online (5 minutes, eta.gov.lk), pay $0 instead of the old $50. The cheapest international trip an Indian can take in 2026.

3. Maldives — 90 days visa on arrival (free). Stamp at Velana airport, no form. Hotel booking required at immigration (they ask). The 90-day length is generous — useful for remote workers.

4. Indonesia / Bali — 30 days visa on arrival, $35. Technically not "visa-free" but functionally is. Pay $35 USD cash or card via molina.imigrasi.go.id before flying, or pay at Denpasar/Jakarta airport on arrival. Extendable once for another 30 days for an additional $35. Bali also charges a separate IDR 150,000 (~INR 850) Tourist Levy — pay online before arrival.

5. Malaysia — 30 days visa-free (extended till 31 December 2026). No e-NTRI form needed since December 2023, but MDAC (Malaysia Digital Arrival Card) is mandatory pre-arrival (free). Walk up to KLIA immigration with passport and MDAC QR. Best transit destination — KL has the most flight connections to other SE Asia capitals.

6. Nepal — visa on arrival, free for Indians (no passport needed for land border). Indians can enter with Aadhaar or voter ID at land borders (Sunauli, Raxaul, Birgunj). For Tribhuvan airport, passport recommended. No fee. Cheapest international trip for Northern Indians.

7. Bhutan — open border, SDF ₹1,200/day for Indians. No visa required but you pay the Sustainable Development Fee. Entry via Phuentsholing or by flight to Paro. ₹1,200/day means a 5-day trip adds ₹6,000 in SDF alone.

8. Cambodia — visa on arrival $30. Land at Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, pay $30 USD cash, get 30-day visa stamp. Bring 2 passport-size photos. E-visa online is $36 — slightly more expensive but skips the airport queue.

9. Laos — visa on arrival $40. Vientiane and Luang Prabang airports. Cash in USD. 30-day stay. Forms filled at the counter.

10. Kazakhstan — 14 days visa-free. Active since January 2024. Stamp at Almaty or Astana airport, 14-day stay limit. Tight for serious exploration but enough for an Almaty + Kolsai Lakes weekend. I used this in January 2024: Kazakhstan trip report.

The Thailand reality post-21-May-2026: same FREE 30-day stamp, but TDAC must be filed online (free) within 72h of arrival. For longer stays, paid e-Visa (~INR 3,000 single-entry) or the DTV digital-nomad visa. Spontaneous Bangkok weekends still work — just file the TDAC the day before.

Honourable mentions (visa-free or low-friction but more restrictive): Macau (30 days visa-free), Hong Kong (14 days, free Pre-Arrival Registration with 6-month multi-entry validity), Mauritius (60 days VoA), Seychelles (30 days), Jordan (VoA at airport $56), Qatar (30 days VoA, Discover Qatar portal hotel booking mandatory). Removed from the list: Iran (visa-free pilot SUSPENDED late Nov 2025 — now needs pre-arrival visa); Bolivia (downgraded from VoA to e-Visa in 2026).

Vietnam is no longer visa-free — it's a paid e-Visa: $25 single-entry or $50 multiple-entry, 90 days, ~3-day processing. Still one of the lowest-friction SE Asia destinations.

Henley 2026 ranking: Indian passport sits around #75, with ~55 visa-free destinations after the Iran/Bolivia losses and the Sri Lanka/Philippines extensions/additions.
