Japan cherry blossom, when to book flights, hotels, ryokans for sakura season
Cherry blossom needs 4-6 months of lead time. Tokyo flights at 4 months out, Kyoto ryokans 6 months. Wait until 2 months out, expect 2.5x prices.
Japan's cherry blossom (sakura) peaks differently across the country: Tokyo and Kyoto see full bloom 25 March - 5 April most years, Osaka one or two days later, Hiroshima 28 March - 6 April, Sapporo as late as 1 May. Booking late costs 2-3x. The Japan Meteorological Corporation releases its first sakura forecast on 10 January each year, that is the day Indian travel agents see a price spike. If you book before 10 January you save money; if you book after, you pay tourist-panic rates.
6 months out (October for next April). Apply for the Japan e-Visa, FREE for Indian passport holders since April 2024 (fee waived; the visa itself takes 3-5 working days). Book Kyoto ryokans first because they sell out earliest. Top picks: Tawaraya (₹50,000/night, books out by November), Hiiragiya (₹45,000), Hoshinoya Kyoto (₹38,000-55,000), Gion Hatanaka with the geiko evening dinner (₹38,000 dinner included). For under ₹15,000/night, look at Ryokan Yoshida-Sanso in Higashiyama or Sakura Ryokan in Asakusa, these go by mid-December.
4 months out (December). Book international flights. Delhi/Mumbai-Tokyo direct on All Nippon Airways or Japan Airlines ₹52,000-60,000 round trip; with a Singapore Airlines or Cathay layover, ₹45,000-52,000. Buy your 7-day JR Pass online from the official JR site, it went up to ₹28,000 in the October 2023 price rise and is still ₹28,000-30,000 in 2026. The pass is only worth buying if you do Tokyo + Kyoto + at least one more long-distance trip (Hiroshima, Sapporo, or a Mt Fuji circuit); for Tokyo-only stays, skip it and use the Suica card.
3 months out (January). Tokyo hotels. Mid-range business hotels (APA, Toyoko Inn, Sotetsu Fresa) ₹6,000-9,000/night in Shinjuku or Shibuya. Capsule hotels ₹2,500-4,000/night, try First Cabin Akihabara or Nine Hours. Watch the 10 January forecast release; if it predicts an early bloom (before 24 March), shift your Tokyo nights forward by 3 days. Book Universal Studios Osaka express passes the same week, they sell out by February.
2 months out (February). Mount Fuji day trip logistics: Hakone Free Pass ₹3,000-3,500 from Shinjuku, 8-hour day, includes the boat ride on Lake Ashi and the rope-way. teamLab Planets and teamLab Borderless Tokyo tickets sell out 4 weeks ahead, book the moment your dates are locked. Also book Shinkansen reserved seats for cherry blossom weekends (Saturday + Sunday), because unreserved cars stand-room-only on peak weekends.
Less crowded sakura spots. Skip Ueno Park and Chidorigafuchi unless you go before 7 AM. Better alternatives: Showa Kinen Park (Tokyo outskirts, 30 minutes from Shinjuku, 1,500 trees, ₹450 entry, almost no foreign tourists), Yodogawa River in Osaka, Daigoji Temple in southern Kyoto (UNESCO, blossoms framed by 5-story pagoda), Mount Yoshino for the dramatic mountainside sakura (3 hours from Osaka, day trip).
Daily costs in 2026 INR. Mid-range traveller: ₹12,000-15,000/day all-in including hotel, food, intra-city transport, one paid attraction. Backpacker: ₹6,000-8,000/day. Premium ryokan + Michelin food: ₹35,000-50,000/day. A 10-day cherry blossom trip for one person, mid-range, totals ₹1.8-2.2 lakh including flights, book before 10 January and save ₹40,000-60,000 versus booking in mid-March panic.
Indian-specific tips. Japan is NOT vegetarian-friendly by default, even miso soup uses dashi (fish stock). Search Google Maps for "saatvik" or "Indian vegetarian" in Tokyo (Andhra Dining Tokyo, Nirvanam, Khazana are reliable). For Jain meals plan ahead and message restaurants on Instagram. Carry your own Maggi and chai sachets, Lawson hot water is available 24/7. eSIMs from Airalo (₹800/10GB) work better than Japanese SIMs which require an address.
FAQ. When exactly is "peak bloom"? Full bloom (mankai) lasts 5-7 days; petals start falling on day 8. Aim to land 2 days before forecast mankai. Can you predict bloom dates from India? Use sakura.weathermap.jp from 1 February onwards, updated weekly. Is night sakura (yozakura) worth it? Yes, Meguro River at night (₹0 entry) and Chidorigafuchi night cruise (₹1,400) are the photographic peak of the trip.
