Korea vs Japan for Indians in 2026: Honest Comparison
Both are dream trips, but only one of them is genuinely visa-easy and budget-friendly for Indians in 2026. Here's the honest split.
Indian travellers ask me this every week. The short answer: Japan for the experience, Korea for the ease. Long answer below.
## Headline numbers (10 days, per person, May 2026)
| | Japan | Korea | |---|---|---| | Flights from DEL | Rs 48k – 62k | Rs 38k – 52k | | Visa fee | Rs 450 (eVisa) | Rs 6,300 (C-3-9) | | Visa processing | 5-7 days | 8-15 days | | Daily budget mid-range | Rs 7,500 | Rs 5,500 | | Total trip | Rs 1.4 – 1.7L | Rs 1.0 – 1.3L |
Live FX: JPY to INR and KRW to INR.
## Visa — Korea is harder than people think
Japan rolled out eVisa for Indians in 2024 (extended 2026), and the process is now 5-7 working days, fully online, Rs 450. Full breakdown at Japan visa.
Korea still requires the old-school C-3-9 short-stay visa with bank statements, ITR, and Korean embassy submission. Rejection rate for first-time Indian applicants ~18% in 2025 per VFS data. See Korea visa.
## Cost on the ground
- Trains: JR Pass 7-day is now JPY 50,000 (~Rs 28,000). Korea's KTX is pay-as-you-go and cheaper — Seoul to Busan is ~KRW 60,000 (~Rs 3,800). - Food: Japan ramen Rs 700-1000. Korean BBQ Rs 1,200-1,800 for two but portions are huge. - Hotels: Tokyo capsule Rs 3,500/night. Seoul guesthouse Rs 2,800.
## Vegetarian reality
Japan is brutal for pure veg — dashi (fish stock) is in almost everything. Carry T-Natural or stick to Indian restaurants in Shin-Okubo and Ueno.
Korea is easier — bibimbap (ask without meat/egg), japchae, kimbap with veg, and Seoul has 30+ explicitly Indian/veg spots.
## Which one for whom
- First international trip, parents in tow → Korea. Less language friction, more veg options, cheaper. - Bucket-list, willing to spend → Japan. Nothing beats Kyoto in November or a bullet train at 300 km/h. - Cherry blossoms → Japan wins, but it's also peak price. Korea's blossoms (early April) are 40% cheaper. - K-drama / K-pop fan → obviously Korea. Hongdae, Myeongdong, Bukchon are the real thing.
## Connectivity
Both countries have excellent eSIM coverage. Airalo and Nomad both work. Skip airport SIMs.
## Scam-watch
- Japan is the safest country I've been to. The only "scam" is the cover charge (otoshi) at izakayas — JPY 300-500 surprise per person. Not a scam, just unfamiliar. - Korea — Itaewon "juicy bar" scams target tourists with inflated drink bills. Stick to mapped venues.
