Schengen Visa Rejection Rate for Indians in 2026
Schengen rejections for Indians hit a record high in 2025. Here's the per-country data for 2026 and which embassy gives you the best odds.
The European Commission's 2025 statistics (published Feb 2026) confirmed what every Indian traveller suspected — Schengen rejection rates for Indians are at a 10-year high.
## 2025 rejection rates for Indian applicants (per EC data)
| Country | Rejection % | Apps from India | |---|---|---| | France | 16.2% | 178,000 | | Germany | 14.8% | 152,000 | | Netherlands | 13.1% | 64,000 | | Italy | 11.7% | 142,000 | | Switzerland | 10.9% | 38,000 | | Spain | 8.4% | 71,000 | | Portugal | 7.6% | 22,000 | | Greece | 6.2% | 41,000 | | Czech Republic | 5.8% | 14,000 | | Austria | 5.4% | 19,000 |
Indian global average: 13.1% vs global average of 9.4%.
## Why the spike
1. Backlog from 2023-24 post-Covid created paperwork shortcuts at embassies — now they over-correct with rejections 2. Asylum claims from a few Indian applicants in 2024 made German and French consulates tighten 3. Bank statement scrutiny — embassies now flag any single large deposit in the 3 months before applying
## How to pick your embassy
The rule: apply through the country where you'll spend the most nights. But within that rule, you have leverage:
- If your itinerary is "France 4 nights, Italy 3 nights, Spain 3 nights" — apply through France (most nights) - If it's "France 3, Italy 3, Spain 4" — apply through Spain (lower rejection, still legitimate) - Don't lie about your itinerary; do legitimately optimize it
## Common rejection reasons (VFS data 2025)
1. Insufficient funds shown — minimum Rs 1 lakh per applicant in account, ideally 1.5 lakh 2. Weak ties to India — no property, no job letter, no return ticket = high risk profile 3. Unexplained large deposits — anything over Rs 1 lakh in last 90 days needs a source-of-funds note 4. Travel history — if this is your first international trip, apply through Spain/Greece/Czech, not France/Germany 5. Insurance — must be EUR 30,000 coverage; many applicants buy EUR 25,000 and get rejected
## What to submit (2026 checklist)
- 6 months bank statements with average balance Rs 1 lakh+ - ITR for 2 years - Job letter with leave approval and salary - Day-by-day itinerary with hotel bookings (refundable via Booking.com) - Confirmed return flight (don't pay full; use a holdable PNR) - Travel insurance EUR 30,000+ valid across all Schengen days +2 - Cover letter explaining trip + ties to India
## If you're rejected
Appeal within 15 days. Better: re-apply with stronger documents through a lower-rejection embassy. Don't apply twice to the same embassy in 60 days — auto-flag.
## Cost of a Schengen application 2026
- Visa fee: EUR 90 (~Rs 8,300) - VFS service: Rs 2,043 - Insurance: Rs 1,500-3,000 - Total: ~Rs 12,000-14,000 per applicant, non-refundable on rejection
