Schengen vs UK Visa: Which Should Indians Apply For First in 2026?

The order in which you apply for Schengen and UK visas materially changes your approval odds. Here is what the 2026 data says for Indian applicants.

Every Indian passport holder eventually faces the same question: Schengen first, or UK first? The answer is not arbitrary — it shapes your rejection risk, your forward travel history, and how much you spend over the next five years.

## The 2026 fee reality

A Schengen short-stay visa now costs EUR 90 (around INR 8,300). VFS adds INR 1,650. Total: ~INR 10,000.

The UK standard visitor visa is GBP 127 (INR 14,200), with TLScontact pushing the total to INR 15,500-16,000. Non-refundable on rejection.

## Rejection rates

Schengen rejection for Indians averaged 18.2% in 2025, with France (12%) and Switzerland (14%) on the lower end. UK visitor visa rejection: 11.4% — counterintuitively lower. But UK rejections are harder to overturn and must be declared on every future Schengen and US application for life.

## The strategic order

1. Schengen first through France, Switzerland, or Netherlands — highest Indian approval rates, multi-entry visas issued more readily. 2. UK second, once 2-3 Schengen entries are stamped. UK officers weight prior EU travel as return intent. 3. US third — B1/B2 interview is dramatically easier with stamps and a clean record.

UK-first only makes sense with a confirmed UK conference invite, family sponsor, or job offer letter.

## Document overlap

Both want 6 months bank statements, 2 years ITRs, employment letter, insurance. Schengen demands EUR 30,000 minimum cover. The UK rejects vague itineraries far more aggressively — be specific.

## Processing time, May 2026

- Schengen via VFS: 12-18 working days, priority slots backed up to July - UK via TLScontact: 15 working days standard, 5 days on Priority (INR 22k extra), 24-hour Super Priority (INR 75k+)

## Final call

Schengen first via France/Switzerland with tight itinerary + EUR 30k insurance. UK once your passport has stamps. Map the sequence in our travel architect.
