Backpacking SE Asia 3 Weeks From India: 2026 Plan
21 days, 4 countries, Rs 90k-1.2L total. The classic SE Asia loop done from India in 2026, with land borders and night buses.
Three weeks, four countries, four currencies. Here is the SE Asia backpacking loop I've sent ten friends on. The 2026 version is cheaper than 2019 was, because of better eSIMs and visa exemptions.
## The route
Bangkok (3) → Chiang Mai (3) → Luang Prabang (3) → Hanoi (2) → Ha Long (2) → Hoi An (3) → HCMC (2) → Siem Reap (3)
Fly in BKK, fly out REP (Siem Reap). Open-jaw.

## Day-by-day (compressed)
Days 1-3 Bangkok. Khaosan area, BTS day pass, Wat Pho, Chatuchak (weekend).
Day 4: Night train to Chiang Mai (sleeper, Rs 1,200).
Days 5-7 Chiang Mai. Doi Suthep, ethical elephant sanctuary (Elephant Nature Park, Rs 6,000), Sunday Walking Market.
Day 8: Bus Chiang Mai → Huay Xai (border). Cross into Laos. Slow boat Huay Xai → Luang Prabang, 2 days (Rs 2,500), worth every hour.
Days 9-11 Luang Prabang. Kuang Si waterfalls, alms ceremony (5:30 AM, be respectful), Mount Phousi sunset.
Day 12: Fly Luang Prabang → Hanoi (Lao Airlines, Rs 4,800; LP-Hanoi overland is too slow).
Days 13-14 Hanoi + Day 15-16 Ha Long Bay — same as our Vietnam 10-day plan.
Day 17: Fly Hanoi → Da Nang.
Days 17-19 Hoi An.
Day 20: Fly Da Nang → Siem Reap (via BKK if cheaper; Cambodia Angkor Air direct exists).
Days 21-23 Siem Reap. Angkor Wat sunrise (Rs 3,200 3-day pass), tuk-tuk for the small circuit, floating villages.

## Land borders (the fun part)
- Chiang Khong (TH) → Huay Xai (LA): easy, friendly, both sides issue stamps without bribes in 2026 (was Rs 500 "overtime fee" in 2019, now gone after KPI reform) - Moc Bai (VN) → Bavet (KH): 6 hour bus from HCMC to Siem Reap, Rs 1,400. Don't take "agent buses" advertised at Bui Vien — they overcharge for visa stamps you can do free.
## Money
Carry forex card (Niyo/Scapia) + USD 200 cash emergency reserve. USD 100 bills get best rates at money changers across all 4 countries.
## Connectivity
Buy a regional eSIM instead of one per country. Nomad SEA 5GB / 30 days, Rs 1,150 covers all 4 countries. Or buy local SIMs in each border crossing for Rs 400-700 each.
## Scam warnings (rapid fire)
- BKK: tuk-tuk Grand Palace closed scam, Khao San "lady drink" scam - Luang Prabang: alms-giving tourists with food sold by middlemen (the food is bad and disrespectful — buy from monks-approved vendors only) - Hanoi: cyclo overcharge, fake Train Street ticket - Siem Reap: "official Angkor guide" without an ID badge — real ones have laminated MoT badges
## Vegetarian/vegan
All 4 countries have strong Buddhist veg tradition. Look for "tay" (Vietnamese), "jeh" (Thai vegetarian), "phak" (Lao no-meat). Cambodia is hardest — stick to fresh fruit, rice, and Indian-Cambodian fusion in Siem Reap.
