Best VPN for China from India — what actually works in 2026
China blocks Google, WhatsApp, Gmail, Maps, Uber, Instagram. Without a VPN you can't book a cab or message home. Three VPNs actually work in 2026.
The Great Firewall blocks everything you use daily: Google (Maps, Gmail, Drive), WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, YouTube, ChatGPT, Claude. Even DuckDuckGo. Uber doesn't work. Indian UPI doesn't work. WeChat Pay is mandatory.
Solution: install a VPN BEFORE flying. Most VPN websites themselves are blocked in China — you can't download once there.
The 3 VPNs that actually work in 2026 (tested April 2026):
1. ExpressVPN — ₹650/month if you grab the 1-year deal. Most reliable in China. Servers in Hong Kong + Singapore are the fastest from mainland.
2. Astrill VPN — ₹2,200/month — most expensive but THE most reliable for mainland China business travel. Has a "Stealth Mode" specifically designed to bypass Great Firewall deep-packet inspection.
3. NordVPN — ₹350/month — cheapest of the three, works ~80% of the time. Backup option, not primary.
VPNs that DON'T work: free VPNs (all blocked), TunnelBear, Hide.me, ProtonVPN free tier.
Setup checklist before flying: 1. Buy ExpressVPN 1-year via expressvpn.com (NOT through China while abroad). 2. Install on phone + laptop while in India. 3. Test ExpressVPN-HongKong-1 server (most reliable from mainland). 4. Download offline maps in maps.me as backup. 5. Get a WeChat Pay account — link Indian Visa card during signup (officially supported since 2023 for foreigners). 6. Install Baidu Maps app for backup if Google Maps goes down.
On-arrival reality: - Hotel WiFi DOES NOT bypass the firewall — you still need VPN. - Some 5-star international hotels (Hilton, Hyatt) have "international" WiFi that allows Google. Spotty. - WeChat works WITHOUT VPN — it's actually how locals communicate.
Indian-specific trap: Don't rely on Indian SIM roaming "to bypass GFW" — Jio iPlan / Airtel Roaming both use Chinese local towers and ARE subject to the GFW.
For trips longer than 7 days, get a Hong Kong eSIM (Airalo ~₹600 for 5GB) — Hong Kong is OUTSIDE the firewall, so eSIM data routes around it.
