Japan Cherry Blossom From Australia: 2026 Plan

Sakura season 2026 forecast, real AUD costs from Sydney and Melbourne, and the underrated cherry blossom cities outside Tokyo.

Cherry blossom season is the single best week to be in Japan, and from Australia it is one of the more reasonable bucket-list trips you can do.

## 2026 bloom forecast (Japan Meteorological Corp, March 2026 update)

| City | First Bloom | Peak (Mankai) | Realistic Visit Window | |---|---|---|---| | Fukuoka | Mar 22 | Mar 30 | Mar 24 – Apr 3 | | Tokyo | Mar 24 | Apr 1 | Mar 26 – Apr 5 | | Kyoto | Mar 28 | Apr 4 | Mar 30 – Apr 8 | | Osaka | Mar 28 | Apr 4 | Mar 30 – Apr 8 | | Kanazawa | Apr 3 | Apr 9 | Apr 5 – Apr 13 | | Hirosaki | Apr 22 | Apr 28 | Apr 24 – May 4 | | Sapporo | Apr 30 | May 5 | May 1 – May 10 |

Sweet spot for first-timers: April 1-8 — Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka all in full bloom simultaneously.

## Total cost (per person, 10 days, AUD)

| Item | AUD | INR equiv | |---|---|---| | Return flight SYD/MEL → NRT/HND | AUD 1,200 – 1,650 | Rs 67k – 92k | | Visa | FREE (90-day visa-free for AU) | - | | Hotels 9 nights mid-range | AUD 1,100 | Rs 62k | | JR Pass 7-day | AUD 525 | Rs 29k | | Food avg AUD 60/day | AUD 600 | Rs 34k | | Activities + entries | AUD 280 | Rs 16k | | Total | AUD 3,700 – 4,150 | Rs 2.1 – 2.3L |

Live: AUD to INR, JPY to INR.

## Flights from Australia 2026

- SYD → NRT direct: Qantas, JAL, ANA, ~9.5 hours, AUD 1,250-1,650 RT - MEL → NRT direct: Qantas, JAL, ~10.5 hours, AUD 1,300-1,700 RT - PER → NRT: 1-stop via SIN, AUD 1,100-1,400 - Cheapest March-April: book by October 2025 for sakura 2026 — prices double in February

## The route (10 days, classic sakura loop)

Days 1-3 Tokyo. Shinjuku Gyoen (paid entry, but the most reliable cherry blossom park), Ueno Park, Chidorigafuchi at night (paid boat rides under blossoms, AUD 5), Meguro River walk at dusk.

Day 4: Day trip to Hakone or Kawaguchiko (Mt Fuji + blossoms = the postcard shot).

Day 5: Shinkansen Tokyo → Kyoto (2.5 hrs, covered by JR Pass).

Days 5-7 Kyoto. Philosopher's Path at dawn, Maruyama Park night illumination, Arashiyama bamboo + Togetsukyo Bridge, Heian Shrine garden.

Day 8: Day trip to Nara (deer + Yoshino if early bloom, else stick to city).

Day 9: Day trip to Osaka. Osaka Castle Park is the city's best sakura spot. Dotonbori at night.

Day 10: Fly home from KIX or back to Tokyo for HND.

## Underrated cherry blossom spots

Skip the Tokyo crowds and go to: - Kanazawa (Kenrokuen Garden, blooms 1 week later) - Hirosaki Castle (later bloom, possibly Japan's best when timed right) - Takato Castle, Nagano (3-day visit; less foreign tourists) - Yoshino, Nara (30,000 trees on a single mountainside)

## Visa for Australians

Australian passport holders get 90 days visa-free entry to Japan, no application. Just an immigration card on arrival and you're stamped in. See Japan visa.

## Money

- IC Card (Suica or Pasmo) for trains and convenience stores — top up at airport, AUD 30 covers most of a week - Cash still matters — Japan is more cash than people think, esp. small temples and ryokans - Card: Wise, Revolut, or any 0% FX card. Wise is the AU favourite. - ATMs: 7-Eleven (Seven Bank) and Japan Post ATMs accept foreign cards reliably

## Connectivity

- Ubigi eSIM Japan 10GB / 15 days AUD 28 - Sakura Mobile physical SIM if you need calls - Skip Pocket Wi-Fi rentals — eSIM is half the price in 2026

## JR Pass — still worth it?

After the 70% price hike in 2023, the JR Pass only breaks even at 4+ shinkansen legs. For this Tokyo-Kyoto-back route, it's borderline. If you add Hiroshima or Kanazawa, JR Pass wins. Otherwise pay-per-trip.

## Scam warnings

Japan is the safest country I've travelled. The main "scams" aren't really scams: - Otoshi (cover charge) at izakayas — AUD 3-5 surprise per person on the bill. Standard, not a scam. - Tatami room shoe etiquette — get this wrong and ryokans charge cleaning fees - "Free guide" near Asakusa offering walking tours that end at expensive shops — politely refuse

## From your city

Sydney to Tokyo, Melbourne to Tokyo.
