Kazakhstan visa-free for Indian passport. Central Asia's open door
Kazakhstan opened to Indian passports in 2024. 14 days visa-free, ₹32k flights from Delhi, and almost zero Indian tourists. The mountains are 90 min from Almaty.
Kazakhstan dropped visa requirements for Indian passports in mid-2024 and the policy is still active in May 2026. 14-day stay, single entry per 180 days, no application needed. Walk up to the immigration counter in Almaty or Astana with a passport that has 6+ months validity, get a paper migration card, and you are in. Almost nobody in the Indian travel community knows this. Kazakhstan saw fewer than 9,000 Indian tourists in 2025 (compared to 1.4 million Indians who visited Thailand).
Why it is underrated. Almaty has Soviet brutalist downtown + Tien Shan mountains 90 minutes away by ₹2,000-3,000 day-trip taxi. Kolsai Lakes (3 alpine lakes, hike between them), Charyn Canyon (often called the "Grand Canyon of Central Asia"), Big Almaty Lake (turquoise, 30 minutes from the city), Shymbulak ski resort, all photographable, all empty of Indian tourists. Bring this up at any Almaty cafe and watch locals' faces light up that an Indian came for the mountains and not just for an Astana business visa.
Flights from India. Delhi-Almaty direct on Air Astana ₹32,000-38,000 round trip, 4-hour flight, four times a week. Mumbai has no direct, connect via Doha (Qatar Airways ₹42,000) or Sharjah (Air Arabia ₹35,000). Bangalore and Chennai connect the same way; budget about ₹45,000 round trip and 11-13 hours total with the layover. I flew Delhi-Almaty in October 2025 and the direct Air Astana flight was the best Central Asia experience I have had at the price.
Russian-language gotcha. Most signs in Almaty are bilingual Kazakh + Russian. English exists in tourist zones (Kok Tobe, Medeu, Panfilov Park) but disappears 10 minutes outside the centre. Download Yandex Translate offline before flying, Google Translate works for spoken Russian but Yandex handles Cyrillic photo translation better. Cab drivers use Yandex Go (the local Uber); the app is in English and saves 30-40% over street taxis.
Mid-range stays. Almaty ₹3,000-5,000/night for a clean 3-star in Bostandyk or Medeu districts. Hostels exist (₹900-1,200/night at Steppe Hostel or Almaty Backpackers) but staff English is hit-or-miss. Airbnb apartments in central Almaty go for ₹2,500-4,000/night if you book 2 weeks ahead, better value than hotels for stays over 4 nights.
The 14-day constraint in practice. Two weeks is enough for 2 days Almaty + 2 days Kolsai + 1 day Charyn + 1 day Big Almaty Lake + 4 days Astana or Shymkent + travel buffer. If you want longer, you must exit the country and apply for a paid 30-day e-Visa ($30) before returning. Land border with Kyrgyzstan at Kordai is the cheapest exit-and-return route.
FAQ. Do Indians need a polio vaccination certificate? No, that requirement was dropped in 2023. Is there a Kazakh Tenge cash limit? You can bring up to $10,000 equivalent without declaration. Can you extend in-country? No, 14 days is hard, no extensions, exit and re-apply.
Pair with the rest of Central Asia. Uzbekistan is visa-free for Indians (30 days), and a ₹4,500 Almaty-Tashkent flight on Air Astana gets you a 2-country Central Asia loop. See Indian passport visa-free list 2026 for the full Tier-1 picture, or where can ₹50,000 live for long-stay options.
