## The 12-day route
Days 1-3 Bangkok. Grand Palace (open every day, ignore "closed today" tuk-tuk scams), Wat Pho, Wat Arun at sunset, Chatuchak Market (weekend only), Khao San at night.
Day 4: Fly Bangkok → Phuket (Thai AirAsia, CAD 45).
Days 4-7 Phuket / Phi Phi. Patong as base (or quiet Kata if you hate crowds). Day trip to Phi Phi by speedboat (CAD 60), James Bond Island half-day (CAD 50). Don't skip Big Buddha viewpoint at sunset.
Day 8: Fly Phuket → Chiang Mai (Thai Vietjet, CAD 55).

## Visa-free for Canadians
Canadian passports get 30 days visa-free entry (was 60, reverted on 21 May 2026 for all 90+ visa-exempt nationalities). Free TDAC arrival card mandatory online within 72h of arrival. See Thailand visa.
Need more time? 30-day extension at any Thai Immigration Office for THB 1,900 (CAD 75) takes total visa-free stay to 60 days, see our Thailand visa extension guide, the process is the same for Canadians. For 60+ day stays, paid e-Visa or DTV digital-nomad visa.
## Money
- Wise card is the Canadian gold standard, interbank FX, free, instant - EQ Bank or Tangerine debit also work for ATMs but charge CAD 5 per withdrawal abroad - Avoid TD, RBC, Scotia, BMO standard cards, 2.5% FX + per-transaction ATM fees - Cash needed: THB 4,000-6,000 (CAD 160-240) for week-1, top up from ATMs - ATMs charge THB 220 (~CAD 8.50) per withdrawal regardless of amount, withdraw THB 20,000 in one go, not 5x THB 4,000
## Connectivity
- Airalo Thailand 7-day 5GB CAD 12 (best for short trips) - Airalo Thailand 30-day 20GB CAD 28 (best for 2-3 week trips) - Skip airport SIM stalls, same Telkomsel/AIS network at 2-3x the price
## Best time from Canada
- November-February: dry, cool (25-30°C), peak prices CAD 1,400-1,700 - March-May: hot (35°C+), CAD 1,100-1,400, less crowded - June-October: monsoon (real rain, not light showers), cheapest CAD 1,000-1,300
## Vegetarian / dietary
Thailand is friendlier to vegetarians than people expect, look for "jeh" (strict Buddhist vegetarian, no garlic/onion) or "mangsawirat" (regular vegetarian, garlic/onion OK). Chiang Mai is veg-friendliest; Phuket has the fewest options.
## Scam warnings
- Grand Palace closed scam, tuk-tuk driver tells you palace is closed, offers cheap "city tour" ending at gem shops. It's never closed during opening hours. Walk past. - Tuk-tuk overcharge, use Grab or Bolt, or agree price before boarding - Phuket jet-ski damage scam, photograph the jet-ski from every angle before renting. Rentals try to charge CAD 500-1,500 for pre-existing scratches - Ping pong show / "ladyboy" photo ambush, avoid Patong's narrow lanes after midnight - ATM "skimming" at Patong and Phi Phi, use ATMs inside 7-Eleven, not standalone street ATMs - DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion), at card terminals, always pick THB, never CAD. INR/CAD conversion at terminal adds 4-7% hidden markup.
