Best eSIM for international travel from India 2026 — Airalo vs Holafly vs Nomad

I've burned through eSIMs on every trip since 2023. Airalo is cheapest per GB. Holafly is the only true unlimited. Jio and Airtel international roaming are still daylight robbery in 2026.

eSIMs are the single biggest QoL upgrade in travel since the smartphone itself. No more queueing at airport SIM counters, no more local-language KYC forms, no more lost physical SIMs. But the market is now crowded — Airalo, Nomad, Holafly, Saily, plus carrier roaming from Jio and Airtel. I priced them all on 1GB / 5GB / unlimited across five destinations in May 2026.

Airalo — the default. Thailand 1GB $4.50 / 5GB $13 / 30GB $26. Japan 1GB $4.50 / 5GB $14. UAE 1GB $5 / 5GB $16. USA 1GB $4.50 / 5GB $15. Schengen-wide ("Eurolink") 1GB $5 / 5GB $16 / 10GB $25. Activates in 5 minutes via QR scan. Best for short trips up to 2 weeks where 5-10GB is enough. Indian payment methods (UPI, RuPay) work.

Nomad — same business model, slightly cheaper on some routes, slightly pricier on others. Thailand 5GB $11.50 (cheaper). Japan 5GB $14.50 (similar). Has "trip plans" that span multiple countries — useful for SE Asia hopping. Pick between Airalo and Nomad based on whichever is cheaper for your specific destination, they're functionally identical.

Holafly — unlimited data, sold as daily passes. Thailand $6.90/day unlimited. Japan $7.40/day. USA $6.90/day. Schengen $6.90/day. For a 7-day trip that's $48 — roughly 2-3x what Airalo costs for 5GB. But if you tether your laptop, video call daily, or upload reels, unlimited is worth it. Best for digital nomads and content creators. Some destinations come with a local phone number — useful for OTP-required services.

Saily (Nord Security) — newer entrant, broadly cheaper than Airalo by 5-15%. Thailand 5GB $11. Eurolink 5GB $13.50. Bundles a VPN. Quality is fine, coverage is similar to Airalo. Worth trying if you already use NordVPN.

Jio international roaming — ₹2,999 for 7 days "unlimited" (FUP 250MB/day, then throttled to 64kbps which is useless). For Thailand that's roughly $36 for what's effectively 1.75GB. Daylight robbery — skip.

Airtel international roaming — ₹2,899 for 10 days unlimited Asia (FUP 1GB/day then throttled). Slightly better than Jio. Still 3x more expensive than Airalo per usable GB. Skip unless you must keep your Indian number active for OTPs and can't afford a 30-second SIM swap.

My setup for a typical SE Asia trip: Airalo 5GB regional plan ($16) covers Thailand + Cambodia + Vietnam + Laos. Indian SIM stays on iPhone secondary slot for OTPs (no data, no roaming, just SMS receive — free or ₹1/SMS). Total connectivity cost for 12 days: ₹1,350.

My setup for Schengen: BookMyForex pre-loaded with EUR, Airalo Eurolink 10GB ($25) covers Germany + France + Italy + Netherlands. Don't fall for country-specific eSIMs in Schengen — regional plan is cheaper.

The data calculation that matters: for navigation + WhatsApp + occasional Maps + Uber, you need 2-3GB per week. Add Instagram scrolling and you're at 5-7GB. Reels uploading needs unlimited (Holafly). YouTube needs unlimited.

The OTP problem: Indian banks and apps (HDFC, ICICI, Swiggy, Zomato, Uber India) send OTPs only to your Indian number. Keep your Indian SIM physically active in dual-SIM mode, with roaming OFF. You'll still receive SMS in most countries for free or ₹1-2/SMS.

Activation timing: install the eSIM 24 hours before flying, but don't activate until you land. Most eSIMs start their countdown the moment you toggle them on — losing a day to airport activation hurts on a 7-day plan.
